Soul Traders

Sunday May 24th
2:45PM -3:55PM

Ralph Coleman - bass & vocals
Bill Harsma - guitar & vocals
Ross Moe – drums
Chris Sawyer - sax & vocals
Jim Sorendo - trumpet & vocals

Local saxophonist chris sawyer (the kingpins, the ron spencer band) and bassist ralph coleman (the tarzan bros., the shakedown blues band) had known and respected one another for years and, although they had jammed and played pick-up gigs with other bands several times, they had never played together as members of the same band. But in early 2008, the opportunity for sawyer and coleman to form a band presented itself, the ìstars moved into alignment,î and, along with their friends, drummer ross moe (the kingpins, the ron spencer band) and guitarist bill harsma (the tarzan bros.), they formed the soul traders. Ìwe knew we wanted to play together with bill and ross,î says sawyer. Ìbut we didn't have any definite idea at first about what type of material we wanted to perform. When we discussed the details, we found we all shared a love of soul music and, more particularly, memphis style soul and r&b, like the old stax and volt stuff. We got together and threw out some tunes to try, and it just came together right away and we went with it.î the band was completed when a mutual friend introduced them to trumpet player jim sorendo (private eye). Sawyer says ìthings clicked immediately the first time jim and i got together to work out horn parts for the tunes. He's a great player and even more important, a great guy. He fit right in with the rest of the band.î ìwhat's different and interesting about the soul traders is that you don't usually see a band of our size doing this type of material,î says coleman. Ìmost soul bands are larger, often with a bigger horn section, two guitars, keyboards, and sometimes backup vocalists. We weren't sure if we could keep the band a five-piece and make it work, but it does. We're just careful about arranging the music to fit our instrumentation.î ìthe relatively small size of the band is more practical, too,î coleman continues. Ìthere aren't as many clubs anymore that feature live music, that have stage room for a big band. With a five piece lineup, we can play in smaller venues and keep it economical for everyone.î harsma, sawyer and coleman all perform lead vocals, and sorendo sings backup. Ìour material is a mix between the fairly well-known stuff, like ìsoul man,î and other material that perhaps isn't as well known,î says sawyer. Ìwe also change it up with more recent material that's stylistically similar to the classic stax tunes. All of it is great dance music, and it's musically interesting for the band members. We're just having a blast with this!
